The Directory's Official Guide to Shadowing
🔍 Finding Healthcare Professionals to Shadow
-
Start with your own network—family, friends, professors, and peers often know providers open to hosting students.
-
Check with OU's pre-health advisors; they may know of physicians, dentists, or other providers who regularly accept students.
-
Explore local hospitals, clinics, or private practices—many have formal shadowing request forms online.
-
Look for professionals in a variety of specialties to broaden your exposure and perspective.

🌟 How to Show Up as Your Best Self
-
Dress professionally and neatly. Typically this looks like scrubs with clean tennis shoes and neat hair or sharp business casual. If unsure, business casual with closed-toe shoes is usually safe, but you should confirm dress code with your point-of-contact before arriving to shadow.
-
Arrive early; punctuality shows respect for their time.
-
Bring a small notebook to jot down observations, but never write during patient interactions unless permitted.
-
Stay engaged—ask thoughtful questions when appropriate, but never interrupt patient care.
-
Do not speak to patients until you have asked for and received permission from the healthcare provider.
-
Always respect patient privacy (HIPAA rules apply—even in shadowing).
-
After the experience, send a thank-you email or handwritten note to show appreciation.
-
Have confidence! Many providers truly enjoy welcoming students come in and shadow their practice :)
